New Westminster allows homeowners to get around using a variety of means of transportation. Thanks to many nearby rapid transit stations on the Expo Skytrain, and around 20 nearby bus lines, New Westminster features a reasonably good public transit system. A majority of the houses for sale in this city are located in places that are also reasonably conducive to those who travel by foot; many day-to-day needs are easy to carry out by walking. Moving around by bicycle is difficult in New Westminster because cyclists encounter a significant amount of elevation changes, and the cycling infrastructure is somewhat poor.

It is easy to get to the nearest supermarket by walking from any location in New Westminster. Twelfth Street is among the best streets for food stores. Moreover, New Westminster is a fairly good place in which to eat out, and residents are served by around 20 cafes as well.
